Rockview Farms - Home Page

Rockview Dairies Inc. had its beginnings on Rives Avenue in Downey, California in 1927.

An Irish immigrant by the name of Bob Hops was the founder and he named his fledgling enterprise after a landmark in his homeland.

In 1932 two brothers, Bill and Joe McCandless, purchased Rockview Dairy from Mr. Hops and moved the company to its present location on Stewart and Gray Road.

Rockview continued to grow and in the early sixties the company had expanded to 6 stores and 70 home delivery routes, and had added a "Wholesale" division with 8 routes. The company's claim to fame was its "Award Winning Golden Guernsey Milk."

Mr. Pete DeGroot, a Dairy Valley farmer, acquired Rockview Farms in 1965 and faced the rather large task of changing the financial direction of the company. Mr. DeGroot had come to Southern California from Holland, and believed in the old country ideal of hard work and its rewards. Under his direction, Rockview Farms began to grow.

After years of effort, Rockview has become a strong viable concern, expanding its influence in Southern California while maintaining the goals set by Pete and his son, Amos.

The DeGroot Family is now in its third generation of management. Pete DeGroot passed away in 1978 and Amos is now President of Rockview Farms, which remains one of the last family-owned fluid milk plants in Southern California.

Ismael "Itch" Vargas (Fleet Manager) and Amos DeGroot proudly display their first place trophy won at a recent truck show.
